The Dunning-Kruger Effect is a cognitive bias where people with lower skill in a domain tend to overestimate their performance, while more skilled people may rate themselves more conservatively because they are more aware of nuance, standards, and what they do not know.Low competence can impair both performance and the ability to accurately evaluate that performance.This is not a claim that “ignorant people are always confident.” It is a statistical pattern in self-assessment: calibration between confidence and actual ability tends to be worst when skill is low.
