# Analytical Thinking

> Analytical Thinking breaks a problem into parts and maps how those parts relate. Origin, Snow's 1854 cholera map, and when analysis fails.

## What is Analytical Thinking?

Analytical Thinking is the skill of taking a whole apart in a principled way and stating how the pieces depend on each other.

That is Descartes in Part II of the *Discourse on the Method* (1637). The cut is not vandalism. You divide *as might be necessary*—enough to solve, not enough to scatter. Anderson and Krathwohl’s 2001 revision of Bloom’s taxonomy keeps the same two moves: break the material into constituent parts, then determine how the parts relate to one another and to an overall structure or purpose.

The everyday picture is a bicycle that will not shift. Staring at “the bike is broken” does no work. You separate cable tension, derailleur hanger, cassette wear, and limit screws, then ask which relation failed. Analytical Thinking has to walk back up: which links, in which order, explain the stall.

[Critical thinking](/thinking/critical-thinking) then judges the claim. Analysis maps the structure; criticism asks whether the map is true, fair, and sufficient. [First-principles thinking](/thinking/first-principles-thinking) tries to land on premises you will defend. Analysis is the prior cut that keeps you from defending a blob.

### Analytical Thinking in 3 Depths

* **Beginner**: Do not stare at the whole mess. Name the pieces. The everyday cue is a bill with ten lines, a recipe that failed, or a group chat that “went badly.”
* **Practitioner**: After the parts, name the relations. Which piece depends on which? What would move if this one moved? A two-column list—parts versus links—beats a longer parts list.
* **Advanced**: Analysis is not reduction. Bloom’s *analyze* includes how parts relate to an overall structure. If you stop at inventory, you have sorting, not analysis. The failure mode is cutting at the wrong joints, then treating the cut as nature.

## Origin

Analytical Thinking began as a method of *division*, not as a slogan that smart people “look at the data.”

The Greek *analysis* means a loosening or breaking up. Aristotle’s *Prior* and *Posterior Analytics* gave the West the word for a study of demonstration. The transferable rule is later. In **1637**, **René Descartes** published the *Discourse on the Method*. The second of his four precepts is to divide each difficulty into as many parts as the solution requires. The third is to climb from the simplest objects to the more complex. Analysis and synthesis sit as a pair: take apart, then reassemble in order.

Classroom language arrived in **1956**, when **Benjamin Bloom** and colleagues issued *Taxonomy of Educational Objectives, Handbook I: Cognitive Domain*. *Analysis* sat above knowledge, comprehension, and application. Bloom split it into analysis of elements, of relationships, and of organizational principles. In **2001**, **Lorin Anderson** and **David Krathwohl** recast the levels as verbs. *Analyze* covers differentiate, organize, and attribute: tell the parts apart, show the structure, and say what purpose or bias a piece is serving.

The name now travels as a workplace skill. The World Economic Forum’s *Future of Jobs Report 2023* found analytical thinking the core skill named by more companies than any other, about **9.1%** of reported core skills. The **2025** report still ranks it first: about **seven in ten** surveyed companies call it essential. That is demand, not a new definition. The definition is still Descartes’ cut plus Bloom’s relations.

## Applications

Use Analytical Thinking when a whole is too large to judge in one look. Do not use it to postpone a decision you already have enough structure to make.

## Case Study

The numbered public window onto Analytical Thinking is **John Snow’s 1854 Broad Street investigation**—not a claim that one pump handle is the whole of epidemiology.

In late August and early September **1854**, cholera tore through Soho. The conventional count of the outbreak is **more than 600** deaths. The dominant story was miasma: bad air. Snow suspected water. He did not argue the theory in the abstract. He cut the event into location, drinking habit, and pump.

On **3 September** he examined Broad Street water and hesitated; the sample showed little obvious filth. He then copied, from the General Register Office, the **89** cholera deaths registered in the week ending **2 September** in Golden Square, Berwick Street, and St. Ann’s, Soho. Nearly all sat near one pump. Only **10** deaths were in houses *decidedly nearer* another street pump. Of those ten, **five** families said they always sent to Broad Street. In the remaining cluster he recorded **61** cases that had used that pump constantly or occasionally. The structure was: deaths × distance × reported water.

On the evening of **Thursday, 7 September**, he put that structure to the Board of Guardians of St. James’s parish. The pump handle was removed the next day, **8 September**. Snow said so himself in a letter printed in the *Medical Times and Gazette* on **23 September 1854**, and he mapped the deaths in the **1855** second edition of *On the Mode of Communication of Cholera*.

Boundary note: Snow also wrote that attacks had already fallen before the handle came off, and that flight from the neighborhood could explain part of the drop. Later inquiry found an infant at 40 Broad Street whose waste fed a cesspool near the well; the father sickened on the day the handle was removed. The lesson is the cut, not a miracle lever. Analysis made a contested joint *visible*. It did not, by itself, prove that one act ended the wave.

## Boundaries and Failure Modes

Analytical Thinking fails when the property you care about is *emergent*. You can list every bird and still miss the flock. It also fails when you cut at the wrong joints. Chopping a novel into “chapter 1, chapter 2” is not analysis of theme. Chopping a budget into “this department, that department” can hide a shared vendor. The taxonomy you bring to the table is already a theory. If the joints are wrong, more detail makes you more precisely lost.

The common misuse is analysis as delay. You keep dividing so you never have to choose. Descartes’ qualifier—*as might be necessary*—is the brake. Another misuse is to treat the parts list as the conclusion, or to call any slow, severe tone “analytical.” Severity is not a method.

The English name collides with criticism, with reductionism, and with spreadsheets.
